News: Turney Group hosts PRYFC Dyno Day

From The Turney Group

All tractor colours were welcome on Saturday at our depot in Princes Risborough, where Turney Group proudly hosted the Princes Risborough Young Farmers Club Dyno Day and opened the yard to an impressive line-up of machines.

From 10 am, our agricultural depot began to fill with the unmistakable sight and sound of tractors arriving for what promised to be a memorable day. Despite the weather, the atmosphere was fantastic. The event delivered the perfect mix of serious horsepower, a great social turnout, and delicious BBQ food.

What Is a Dyno Day?

A Dyno Day centres around the use of a dynamometer, commonly referred to as a dyno. A dynamometer is a specialized device used to measure an engine’s performance, specifically:

  • Horsepower (HP)
  • Torque
  • Rotational speed (RPM)

For tractors, a PTO, or Power Take-Off, dynamometer is typically used. The tractor’s PTO shaft connects directly to the dyno, which then applies a controlled load to the engine. As the engine works against this resistance, the dyno carefully measures:

  • The torque being produced
  • The PTO shaft speed in RPM
  • The calculated horsepower output

Horsepower is calculated using torque and RPM, following the formula HP = Torque × RPM ÷ 5252. This means the dyno provides an accurate, real-world measurement of what a tractor is genuinely delivering at the PTO, rather than relying solely on manufacturer specifications.

Dyno testing is valuable for several reasons. It helps check engine health, identify potential power loss, compare performance after tuning or repairs and, of course, provides a little healthy competition.

The Line-Up

Twelve tractors took part on the day, ranging from a solid 90 HP to an impressive 476 HP. The variety of sizes, ages, and setups made for an engaging comparison, with plenty of discussion as each tractor stepped up to the dyno.

The larger horsepower machines certainly drew attention, but every tractor contributed to the day’s success. It was a fantastic showcase of machinery and a great opportunity to see how different models performed under load.

More Than Just Horsepower

While the dyno runs were the highlight, the event was about far more than peak figures. With 20 to 30 members of the Young Farmers Club in attendance, the day provided an excellent opportunity to catch up, talk machinery and farming, share knowledge and advice and meet the Turney Group team.

The BBQ kept everyone well fuelled throughout the day, adding to the relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. Burgers in one hand and horsepower figures in the other proved to be a winning combination.

Supporting the Next Generation

Hosting the event for Princes Risborough Young Farmers Club made the occasion even more rewarding. Young Farmers Clubs play an important role in supporting young people in agriculture by offering opportunities for skills development, social connection and hands-on learning.

A Dyno Day delivers exactly that. It provides practical exposure to machinery performance, encourages a deeper technical understanding of engines and creates space for real-world discussions around power, efficiency and maintenance.

Thank you to everyone who attended, brought a tractor and helped make the day such a success. We look forward to welcoming you back to Princes Risborough for future events.
